WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM RWANDA?

Known for its rolling hills and stunning landscapes, it’s a destination where you can trek to see endangered mountain gorillas, walk above rainforest canopies, and relax by the quiet shores of Lake Kivu. TYPICAL COSTS WHEN TRAVELLING

Accommodation – Rwanda offers a range of accommodation options. Budget travelers can find decent hostels or guesthouses in Kigali for around $15–$25 per night, while mid-range hotels range from $40–$80. Luxury lodges near tourist hubs like Volcanoes National Park or Lake Kivu can go upwards of $200–$1000 per night, especially those offering gorilla trekking packages.

Food – Local food is affordable and widely available. A meal at a small local restaurant (known as a “milk bar” or “bistro”) might cost just $2–$4. In more upscale restaurants or touristy areas, expect to pay $8–$15 for a full meal. Rwandan staples include brochettes (meat skewers), ugali, isombe, and fried plantains.

Transportation – Public buses and shared minivans (matatus) are cheap and popular for getting around — fares within Kigali usually cost less than $1. Moto-taxis are widely used for short trips and cost between $0.50–$3 depending on distance. Private taxis and car hires cost more, and if you’re traveling to national parks or rural regions, expect to pay $50–$150 per day for a private vehicle and driver.

Places to stay in Rwanda

Suggested daily budget: A typical daily budget in Rwanda ranges from $25–$40 for budget travelers staying in hostels and eating local food, $60–$120 for mid-range travelers using private transport and staying in boutique hotels, and $200 or more for luxury travelers enjoying high-end lodges, private tours, and premium experiences like gorilla trekking.

MONEY SAVING TIPS

1
Eat local meals Dining at local restaurants or street food stalls can save you a lot compared to tourist cafés. Dishes like brochettes, isombe, and chapati are tasty, filling, and usually cost just a few dollars — making it easy to eat well on a budget.
2
Use moto-taxis and minibuses Instead of renting a private car, use moto-taxis for short city trips and shared minibuses for intercity travel. They're cheap, widely available, and perfect for getting around like a local without draining your wallet.
3
Travel during the low season Visiting Rwanda during the rainy season (March–May or October–November) can help you score better deals on accommodation and tours, especially in popular areas like Volcanoes National Park or Lake Kivu.
4
Book activities locally Booking tours or safaris online in advance often comes with a markup. Once in Rwanda, you’ll find trusted local operators offering the same activities at lower prices — especially for lake excursions, village tours, and hikes.
